The Landscape Engineer combines principles of civil engineering, horticulture, and landscape architecture to design, plan, and oversee the construction and maintenance of outdoor spaces. This role focuses on the technical aspects of landscape projects, ensuring their functionality, sustainability, safety, and aesthetic appeal. The Landscape Engineer will be responsible for site analysis, grading and drainage design, irrigation system development, material selection, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and environmental regulations for various projects, including parks, public spaces, urban developments, residential areas, and commercial landscapes.
Key Responsibilities:
Site Analysis & Assessment:
Conduct comprehensive site analyses, including topography, soil conditions, hydrology, climate, and existing vegetation.
Evaluate site constraints and opportunities for landscape development.
Design & Planning:
Develop detailed engineering drawings and specifications for landscape projects, including grading plans, drainage systems, irrigation layouts, hardscape elements (paving, retaining walls, steps), and softscape planting plans.
Integrate sustainable design practices, such as water conservation, native plant selection, and stormwater management.
Collaborate with landscape architects, urban planners, architects, and other engineers to ensure cohesive and integrated designs.
Technical Calculations & Documentation:
Perform engineering calculations for earthwork volumes, drainage capacities, irrigation demands, and structural stability of landscape features.
Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, cost estimates, and tender documents.
Ensure all designs comply with local building codes, environmental regulations, and engineering standards.
Project Management & Supervision:
Oversee the construction and implementation phases of landscape projects, ensuring adherence to design specifications, quality standards, and project schedules.
Conduct site inspections, resolve technical issues, and approve material submittals.
Manage project budgets and resources effectively.
Water Management Systems:
Design efficient and effective irrigation systems, including sprinkler layouts, drip irrigation, pump stations, and control systems.
Develop stormwater management solutions, such as permeable paving, rain gardens, bioswales, and detention/retention ponds.
Material Selection & Specification:
Select and specify appropriate materials for hardscape elements, planting, and site furnishings, considering durability, aesthetics, and sustainability.
Environmental Considerations:
Incorporate principles of ecological design, biodiversity enhancement, and green infrastructure into projects.
Address environmental impact assessments and mitigation strategies related to landscape interventions.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization or strong coursework in Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, or a related field; or a Bachelor's/Master's degree in Landscape Architecture with a strong emphasis on engineering and technical aspects.
Experience: [Specify required experience level, e.g., X years of progressive experience in landscape engineering, civil engineering with landscape focus, or a relevant field. Internships count for entry-level.]
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D is highly preferred).
Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for site analysis and planning.
Strong understanding of hydraulics, hydrology, and soil mechanics.
Knowledge of irrigation design software (e.g., WaterCAD, HydroCAD) is a plus.
Familiarity with 3D modeling and rendering software (e.g., SketchUp, Rhino, Lumion) is a plus.
Knowledge:
In-depth knowledge of landscape construction techniques, materials, and best practices.
Understanding of plant materials, horticulture, and ecological principles relevant to the local climate (especially pertinent for Al Khobar/Saudi Arabia).
Familiarity with local building codes, environmental regulations, and urban planning guidelines in Saudi Arabia.
Soft Skills:
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
